PHOENIX – The Lynx announced Saturday that star forward Napheesa Collier is out for Sunday’s win-or-go home Game 4 in the WNBA semifinal series against the Phoenix Mercury due to a left ankle injury.
Collier exited Friday’s Game 3 loss in Phoenix with 21.8 seconds remaining after rolling her left ankle.
As Collier dribbled near the Lynx three-point line with her team trailing by four, Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas poked the ball free for a steal and layup. Thomas’ lower body made contact with Collier’s left knee on the follow-through, causing her knee to buckle and her ankle to roll as she planted her foot.
Collier immediately grabbed for her ankle as she fell. She was able to stand and limp off the court to the team’s bench, then was assisted in walking into the tunnel and to the locker room.
The Lynx won Game 1 of the best-of-five semifinal series but dropped Game 2 at home, then Game 3 in Phoenix on Friday. They face a win-or-go-home Game 4 without the WNBA’s two-time runner-up for league MVP, who averaged 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks in the top-seeded Lynx’s regular season.
Collier had scored 17 points when she exited Friday’s game. In six postseason games, she has averaged 20.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Lynx.
Coach Cheryl Reeve was suspended for Game 4 for her “conduct and comments,” per the WNBA’s press release, while disputing Game 3’s officiating. In particular, she called out that Collier had drawn zero fouls in Friday’s game.
“One of the best players in the league shot zero free throws, and she had five fouls, zero free throws,” Reeve said. “Had her shoulder pulled out and finished the game with her leg being taken out and probably has a fracture.”
